`The Crown’ Tops Streaming Viewership For Second Consecutive Week

For the second time in the two full weeks its fourth season was available “The Crown” was the most-watched program on the four streaming services measured by Nielsen according to figures released Wednesday.

Viewers watched 2.215 billion minutes of the 40 episodes of the Netflix series about the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II between Nov. 23-29, 34% less than the 3.358 billion minutes watched the previous week.

There were three programs in the latest Top 10 that were not in the previous week’s, topped by the film comedy “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” second for the week with 1.518 billion minutes watched in the first five days of its release on Netflix.

The other newcomers were the romantic drama “Virgin River,” third for the week with 1.295 billion minutes watched, and the film drama “Hillbilly Elegy,” seventh for the week with 787 million minutes watched.

The 10-episode second season of “Virgin River” was released Nov. 27 and “Hillbilly Elegy” Nov. 24.

Dropping out of the Top 10 were the competition series “The Great British Baking Show,” the animated children’s comedy “The Boss Baby: Back in Business” and the long-running CBS action drama “NCIS.”

This is the first week six programs have surpassed the 1 billion minutes mark in viewership. Nielsen began publicly disclosing streaming viewership figures Sept. 3, with the first report covering the week of Aug. 3-9.

The other programs surpassing the 1 billion minutes mark were “The Mandalorian,” fourth for the week with 1.21 billion minutes watched of its 13 episodes, including the fifth episode of its second season, which became available Nov. 27; the 2005-13 NBC comedy “The Office,” fifth with 1.142 billion minutes watched of its 192 episodes; and “The Queen’s Gambit” sixth with 1.072 billion minutes watched of the seven-episode Netflix miniseries starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a female chess prodigy.

The Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” was the only non-Netflix programming in the Top 10 for the fourth consecutive week. Nielsen also measures viewership for Amazon and Hulu.

The Top 10 consisted of six original streaming programs, which accounted for the top four programs and six of the top seven, and four programs that originally aired on North American broadcast networks.

The Top 10 programs were `The Crown”; “The Christmas Chronicles 2”; “Virgin River”; “The Mandalorian”; “The Office”; “The Queen’s Gambit”; “Hillbilly Elegy”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “Criminal Minds”; and “Schitt’s Creek.”
