Donald Trump has suggested that Americans can wear scarves over their faces to protect themselves against coronavirus.
Asked about whether guidance on wearing masks and makeshift face-coverings had been updated Tuesday, the president said: ‘You can use a scarf a lot of people have scarves. A scarf would be very good.
‘My feeling is if people want to do it, theres certainly no harm to it. do it.
‘You can use scarves, you can use something else over your face. It’s not a bad idea for a period of time.’
Trump’s updated suggestion came after weeks of advice that surgical masks would not protect against the spread of coronavirus unless properly fitted, and that even then it did not stop the virus being transmitted by people rubbing their eyes.
Trump also asked Americans not to try and buy surgical masks desperately needed for doctors in hospitals, saying: ‘We are making millions and millions of masks but we want them to go to the hospitals. We don’t want people competing with them.’
He spoke as the number of coronavirus diagnoses in the US rocketed to close to 190,000 on Tuesday evening, with at least 3,564 people killed by Covid-19.
Trump also repeated his warning that the coronavirus outbreak will worsen in the coming weeks, saying: ‘This is going to be a hell of a two weeks, maybe three weeks. This is going to be something like we’ve never seen before.’
