Tottenham star Harry Kane should join Manchester United because he could be left ‘devastated’ by a trophyless career in north London.
That’s the view of former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand, who believes the England captain must make a difficult decision over his future at Spurs.
On Sunday, Kane dropped the biggest hint yet that he’s ready to leave the club after he admitted that he wants to assess if the board can match his ambition.
Spurs have won one trophy in the last 22 years and Ferdinand believes Kane’s career would benefit from a move to Old Trafford.
‘We’ve seen the news this morning. When he’s been pressed in the past about his loyalty to Spurs he’s always been a bit coy but this isolation I don’t know what it’s done to him but he’s dropped a couple of bombs,’ Ferdinand said on Instagram Live.
‘If and it’s a big if….Spurs…Mourinho…Mr Levy etc if there isn’t success here at the club I support then i’m going to have to start to look at things.
‘Your career is a short career. I want to win things, I want to be successful. If I don’t see that at Spurs – though my love is here for Spurs, I love the club i’m loyal – i want to win things.
‘I’ve said it a number of times in regard to Spurs and Kane I’ve been hammered by Spurs fans [saying] ‘don’t say that about him’ but I’m only speaking what a footballer should thinking – you want to be successful.
‘If you’ve got aspirations to be successful and you can go out there and court big clubs and go to successful places where you can win things you’ve got to be searching for that. He can’t be sitting there and be totally happy at Spurs.’
Kane signed a new six-year deal in 2018 following Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to commit his future to the club.
Spurs looked to be on the cusp of greater things but their run to the Champions League final disguised faults elsewhere and the Argentine was sacked earlier this season with Tottenham in 14th.
Ferdinand believes Kane needs to decide if he can commit to another rebuild in north London.
‘They were onto a great thing with Pochettino, riding the crest of a wave to go and get success, just about to get there and it’s fallen apart,’ said Ferdinand.
‘Mourinho’s come in, trying to build but is he going to waste his career on building? Is he going to go up, not quite get there and come back down again. he would have been thinking we’ve got Son, Dele Alli, we had Kyle Walker, Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Toby [Alderweireld] then all of a sudden things aren’t going to plan, trophies haven’t come so what’s he to do, just hope they come?
‘[He can]Finish career as top goalscorer, break loads of records with no trophies. trust me if he does that, breaks Alan Shearer’s record, England’s record, few golden boots and no trophies or one trophy a Carling cup of whatever do you think Harry Kane will feel he’s be fulfilled?
‘Yes he’ll have made loads of money but he’ll do that anywhere but he won’t have nothing to remember in terms of great day picking up a trophy here and there.
‘Do you think he’ll be satisfied? I’ll tell you now: NO. He won’t be, he’ll be devastated.
‘Man Utd will be in for him because he’s perfect for United. Juventus would be in they talked in media before about Juve for him, Real have been buying young top potential but do they want an experienced one to help? I reckon they’d be on the scene.’
