Donald Trump has asked Americans to start wearing face coverings in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus. The President of the United States cited updated Centers for Disease Control guidance Friday, saying: ‘The CDC is recommending that Americans wear a basic cloth or fabric mask that can be purchased online or made at home.’

On Thursday, President Trump suggested that a simple scarf could be used in place of face masks, after urging Americans not to try and buy them to try and preserve existing stocks for hospital workers and paramedics treating coronavirus patients.

He stressed that Friday’s guidance is ‘voluntary’, and added: ‘I’m choosing not to do it, but some people want to do it and that’s okay. It’s only a recommendation, it’s voluntary.’

The CDC says wearing a face covering could help stop people who have Covid-19 stop spreading the highly contagious droplets that contain the virus. Scientists think many people who contract coronavirus will have no symptoms of the illness for several days – but are still able to transmit the virus during that asymptomatic phase.

Asked why he wasn’t going to wear one Trump added: ‘I just don’t want to wear one. Somehow, sitting in the Oval Office behind that great resolute desk as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens, somehow I don’t see it.’

US Surgeon General Jerome Adams said previous guidance not to wear masks had been updated thanks to recent studies about asymptomatic coronavirus suffers being able to spread Covid-19.

Dr Adams advised anyone who planned on following the new guidance to ensure the covering was put on with freshly hands, and that people who wear them should avoid touching the covering with their hands while out and about.

Almost 275,000 people have now been diagnosed with coronavirus in the US, with over 7,000 people killed by the virus.
