Manchester United will fail in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho if they don’t secure Champions League football for next season, according to reports.
The 20-year-old is one of United’s key targets in the next transfer window, although there is significant uncertainty over when that transfer window will take place, with the coronavirus hiatus impacting the end date of the current season and the start date of the next campaign.
The Red Devils are expected to make a huge bid for the England international when they are next able to do so, but he will need to be guaranteed Champions League football if he is to move to Old Trafford.
The Sun reports that the winger will only be interested in a move to a Champions League side, and if Manchester United fail to return to Europe’s top table, that will give the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool an advantage in the race for his signature.
United currently sit fifth in the Premier League, one place and three points behind Chelsea, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City occupying the top three places in the division.
Due to Man City’s two-year Champions League ban, which is still in place, it may be that fifth place is enough to book a spot in the top European competition next season, but that it not guaranteed as yet.
There is still the possibility that this Premier League season will be voided and the teams which qualified for this season’s Champions League would be placed into the competition again next season, which would leave the Red Devils foundering back in the Europa League.
Manchester City have matching rights on any successful bid for their former player, so if they can successfully appeal their Champions League ban, they could not only force United out of the competition, but also pinch Sancho from under their noses if they wish to do so.
However, Chelsea appear to be the club most keen to fight United for the young winger and if they can offer him Champions League football when the Red Devils cannot, that could be enough to tempt him to Stamford Bridge.
