A “slow-moving, winter-like storm” is heading for the Southland and will dump substantial amounts of rain and snow on Riverside County this week, forecasters said Sunday.
The heaviest showers will come Monday afternoon through Tuesday, then begin to taper off by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Areas west of the mountains are expected to see up to 2.5 inches of rain while the Coachella Valley is expected to see up to an inch of rain.
“Inflow into the Whitewater River will need to be monitored and may cause low-water crossing impacts in the Coachella Canal by Tuesday,” the NWS said.
Additionally, the rain could cause flooding in places with poor drainage and near recent burn scars.
Temperatures during the storm will be unseasonably colder by 5 to 15 degrees, according to the NWS.
The storm is also expected to produce snow in mountain areas above 5,500 feet through Thursday, though the snow level could fall to as low as 4,500 feet, forecasters said.
A Winter Storm Warning will go into effect at 11 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Thursday for elevations above 5,500 feet.
Forecasters expect the total snow accumulations to be 4 to 12 inches between 5,000 and 6,000 feet, 1 to 2 feet between 6,000 and 7,000 feet and 2 to 4 feet above 7,000 feet.
“Travel will be very difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” the NWS warned.
The storm is expected to clear by Friday, followed by dry and milder weather for next weekend.
