While tonight’s TV special to mark what would have been the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 wasn’t a huge hit with everyone, its climactic performance was nothing if not unprecedented.
Indeed, the final performance of Europe Shine a Light – which aired on BBC1 this evening with commentary from Graham Norton – featured all of this year’s would-be performers joining to perform the classic Eurovision anthem Love Shine a Light.
From rivals to friends!
As well as Jeangu Macrooy, representing host country Holland, and the United Kingdom’s 2020 entry James Newman, the socially-distanced feat of production and editing featured a very special guest.
Katrina of Katrina and the Waves!
Yes, the Waves’ frontwoman – who steered the UK to victory with this very song in 1997 – sang the final line, accompanied by her pet dog.
Heartwarming.
The performance followed complaints from fans on social media that the broadcast was too ‘depressing’ and ‘Americanised’.
Ouch.
It also followed another Eurovision special aired earlier in the evening called Come Together, in which ABBA were crowned the UK’s favourite Eurovision act of all time.
Hard agree!
