A man was killed by a vehicle while crossing a Pomona street on Saturday, authorities said.
At around 7:45 p.m., a vehicle going northbound struck the pedestrian, who was running from the east curb across Garey Avenue by Grand Avenue, according to Lt. Ryan Rodriguez of the Pomona Police Department.
An officer found the victim, who appeared to be in his 30s, lying in the road with head injuries and trauma to the lower half of his body, Rodriguez said. A portion of his leg had detached and was found some distance away, authorities said.
He was rushed to Pomona Valley Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room, police said. His name will be released pending notification of next of kin, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
The driver passed an alcohol-sobriety test, according to Rodriguez, who said that drugs were not considered a factor in the accident.
A videographer at the scene said the collision happened dozens of feet from the intersection and the driver parked at a nearby tire shop.
“The driver was completely cooperative,” Rodriguez said.
The police department’s Major Accident Team was searching for evidence to photograph and diagram the crash site, he said.
Anyone with additional information was asked to call Pomona police at 909-620-2155.
