Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones would love to return as Marianne for a sequel series, just not quite yet

Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones has spoken about the now-mythical sequel series, saying she would love to play Marianne again one day.

There’s just one problem – she doesn’t want to do it quite yet.

Normal People debuted to a rapturous reception from both critics and viewers earlier this year, as everyone got swept up in the star-crossed romance of Marianne (Edgar-Jones) and Connel (Paul Mescal).

Adapted from Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same name, the series ended on a sombre but hopeful note, and many have been clamouring for a return to the world, and Daisy is among them…although she wants to wait a bit first.

‘The open ending is kind of perfect. That’s what life is like, you never know what’s around the corner,’ the actress said (via Mail Online). ‘I quite like that I don’t know where they are and that we don’t have to say goodbye to them.

‘But at the same time, I guess I would be curious to see where they go, maybe in their next stage of life, maybe in their early 30s or even later.’

Ultimately, Daisy says, the future of Normal People rests with author Rooney, and the cast will follow ‘whatever she wants to do.’

And it’s not just the actors who are hoping to get back to work.

Series director Lenny Abrahamson has also spoken out about a second series could pan out in the future.

Speaking to Deadline, Lenny said: ‘We’ve talked about the possibility of how interesting it would be to check back in with them, but apart from just general musings and over a drink, no, there have been no concrete discussions about what it would be like.

‘As Sally [Rooney, writer] says, the book stops where it stops because it feels right.

‘But, I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I’d love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are.’

We could even see the start of a Sally Rooney Cinematic Universe (the SRCU) as her debut novel, Conversations with Friends, has just been confirmed to be heading to the small screen too.

Right, well we’ll all meet back here in 2030 for Normal People 2: Normal Harder.

Normal People is available to stream now via BBC iPlayer.
