The Witcher’s showrunner has revealed that fan criticism has helped to change Geralt’s (Henry Cavill) character in the upcoming second season.

Netflix’s answer to Game of Thrones dropped its first season late last year to middling acclaim from critics, but it seems like the creative team is hard at work to make the sequel series a home run.

Namely, creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has said that certain criticism that fans levied against the titular character Geralt will be addressed in the new scripts. Mainly, that he is an incredibly insular character sworn off getting involved in important or dramatic events…before them becoming involved anyway.

Talking to TV Guide, Hissrich explained that she ‘absolutely’ agreed with fans on social media that argued as that Geralt’s biggest enemy in the show was really ehe plot, and that the next run of episodes will see Geralt open up a lot more.

‘I think a lot of that conflict is fun to play, and it’s kind of all going to explode in season two,’ she said.

‘All of the times that we saw him withhold, all the times that we saw Geralt sort of internalise things as opposed to externalise, in season two he’s going to be confronted with that a lot more and has to make some different choices.’

Hissrich also revealed that the show will be undergoing another major change in its second season – namely the removal of the controversial timelines.

Inspired by the non-linear storytelling of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, the first season followed Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allen) in three seperate timelines, that converged in the series finale.

The writer told The Wrap: ‘Obviously, it was one of the most controversial parts of season one and I didn’t expect it to be as controversial as it was.

‘So what we’ll see in season two is that all of our characters are existing on the same timeline.’

Netflix have also revealed that the show’s second season will kickstart its production back into gear in August after it was initially delayed due to coronavirus.

The Witcher is available to stream now via Netflix.
