There has been a lull at the box office for 5 months now. Let alone seeing a record smasher, we are waiting to just watch a normal film in cinemas. Of course, the real movie-watching experience in theaters is not coming back any time soon. So we are here with a list of Bollywood films which proved to be record smashers at the box office, once upon a time.

Before going ahead, let me clarify that this is not a list of the highest-grossing films of Bollywood but those which crossed an All-Time top grosser to take the position. In the list, I will also discuss the time period for which these films ruled at the No. 1 position.

1) Kismet

Directed by Gyan Mukherjee, this 1943 film was the first Bollywood movie to touch 1 crore mark. Kismet had Ashok Kumar & Mumtaz Shanti in lead and ruled the top spot for 6 years.

2) Barsaat

In 1949, Raj Kapoor & Nargis starrer Barsaat released and crossed Kismet. The film which was directed by Raj Kapoor only did a business of 1.25 crore. The film stood on top of the chart for 3 years.

3) Aan

In 1952, Mehboob Khan directorial Aan broke all the records. The film had Dilip Kumar in lead along with Nimmi and went on to do a business of 1.52 crore. Again, Aan ruled the chart of top grossers for 3 years.

4) Shree 420

In 1955, Raj Kapoor again broke all the records with his Shree 420. The legendary actor and filmmaker directed and acted in the film. Nargis was the lead heroine of Shree 420 and the film did a business of 2.10 crores. It ruled the chart for 2 years.

5) Mother India

1957 was a huge year for Bollywood. The industry was blessed with an iconic film like Mother India which shattered all the previous records by leaps and bounds. The Mehboob Khan directed film had Nargis in lead along with Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar and others. It did a historic business of 4.5 crores and ruled the chart for 3 years.

6) Mughal-E-Azam

In 1960, Bollywood got another historic film Mughal-E-Azam. A film which is still remembered by so many cinema lovers. Back in 1960, this K. Asif directed film was set on a huge budget. Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala, Dilip Kumar, Ajit Khan, Murad among others, Mughal-E-Azam did a business of 6 crores and remained unbeatable of straight 15 years.

7) Sholay

There was no film till 1975 which could break the record of Mughal-E-Azam. But Sholay came and smashed it with a huge margin. The Bollywood cult classic starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kapoor and others was a monstrous success.

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Sholay did a lifetime business of 15.5 crores and remained unbeatable for 19 years.

8) Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Almost 2 decades after Sholay, Salman Khan & Madhuri Dixit led family drama and romantic film Hum Aapke Hain Koun released and proved to be a record-breaker. The film didn’t just break the record of Sholay, it gained a lead of epic proportion.

The 1994 film directed by Sooraj Barjatya did a lifetime business of 71 crores and remained on top of the chart for 7 years.

9) Gadar

With the start of the new millennium, Gadar in 2001 brought the happiness back on the faces of exhibitors. Gadar starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in lead was a box office sensation. Despite clashing with another biggie Lagaan, the film managed to do a lifetime business of 77 crores. The record of Anil Sharma directorial remained untouchable for 5 years.

10) Dhoom 2

Hrithik Roshan had become a huge name by 2006. So when he played a lead role in the sequel of action-packed Dhoom film it proved to be huge. The film also starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan & Uday Chopra did a business of 81 crores. Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, the film ruled the top spot for 2 years.

11) Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

In Dec 2008, Shah Rukh Khan & Aditya Chopra came back with a romantic film. The film marked the debut of Anushka Sharma and did a business of 85.50 crores. RNBDJ broke the record of Dhoom 2 to take the top spot but couldn’t rule it for a long time. It managed to remain on top spot for a few days only.

12) Ghajini

On Christmas 2008, Aamir Khan’s much-awaited Ghajini released. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film was a nationwide sensation and became first 100 crores grosser of Bollywood. Ghajini also marked the Bollywood debut of Asin and with a business of 114 crores, it ruled the top spot for 1 year.

13) 3 Idiots

Exactly after 1 year, Christmas 2009 saw the release of 3 Idiots which broke the record of Ghajini by leaps and bounds. If Ghajini started 100 crores club in the Bollywood, 3 Idiots started 200 crores club. The Rajkumar Hirani directorial had Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan & Sharman Joshi in lead and did a lifetime business of 202 crores. The record wasn’t broken for 4 years.

14) Chennai Express

Shah Rukh Khan & Deepika Padukone came back together after Om Shanti Om for Chennai Express. The 2013 rom-com directed by Rohit Shetty proved to be huge and crossed 3 Idiots. The film did a lifetime business of 226.7 crores but it ruled the top sport only for few months.

15) Krrish 3

2013’s Diwali release Krrish 3 was a big one for many reasons. 3rd part of India’s only successful superhero brand. Plus the film had Hrithik Roshan in lead along with Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi. At the box office, the film did a business of 240.5 crores and crossed Chennai Express. The film ruled the chart for a month approximately.

16) Dhoom 3

Krrish 3 was soon overpowered by 2013’s Christmas release Dhoom 3. The film had Aamir Khan in a double role and Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra along with him. The franchise power, star value and huge budget helped the film record a monstrous number of 280.25 crores. Dhoom 3 remained the top grosser of Bollywood for 1 year.

17) PK

In 2014, Aamir Khan & Rajkumar Hirani’s much-awaited PK released and started 300 crores club. Also starring Anushka Sharma & Sushant Singh Rajput, the film did a business of 339.5 crores. It remained top grosser of Bollywood for 2 years.

18) Dangal

On Christmas 2016, Aamir Khan came back at the box office with biographical sports drama Dangal. The film which had him in lead along with newcomers Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra & Zaira Wasim did a business of 387.39 crores. It has been close to 4 years since the release of Dangal, but no Bollywood film has been able to cross the record so far.
