Casualty review with spoilers: David confronts his fears and Dylan confronts Lev

David opens up to Rosa (Picture: BBC)

This was a rather harrowing episode of Casualty to watch, as much of it dealt with the pain of mental illness.

A young man, Matt, was brought to the hospital after hurting his leg as he tried to escape from the police. More traumatic for Matt were the thoughts in his head persuading him that he was a ‘waste of skin.’ He thought everyone was out to hurt him and was terrified of what the hospital staff might do to him as they tried to treat him.

This brought up some painful memories for nurse David Hide (Jason Durr), who has his own struggles with bipolar. It didn’t help that the psychiatric doctor who was called to see Matt was the one who’d previously sectioned David.

In powerful scenes between David and Matt, some frightening flashbacks to David’s time when he was sectioned, and Robyn (Amanda Henderson)’s kindly interventions, David eventually realised that having Rosa (Jacey Salles) back had unsettled his daily routine to the point where he was feeling out of control.

Robyn pointed out that the real problem was the effort David was making to hide his illness from Rosa and he eventually plucked up the courage to talk to his wife.

He told her that he was scared she would change in her attitude to him, blaming his bipolar for every change of mood and treating him differently. ‘You’re not an illness, you’re my husband,’ she reassured him.

I doubt that Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) is going to be as understanding with her husband Lev (Uriel Emil) if she ever finds out what he’s been up to. Last week we saw him meeting up with another man for some ‘adult fun’ in the back of a car.

When the man, Xander (Danny Szam), came to the ambulance station later to talk to Lev, Dylan (William Beck) saw them kissing.

How unlucky for Lev, then, that when Xander had to come to the ED with his friend Claudie, who was pregnant with his child (by sperm donation) it was Dylan who treated Claudie. And when Xander asked if Lev was around, Dylan realised where he’d seen him before.

He confronted Lev, who told him, in a somewhat threatening manner, that he was wrong. Later he begged Dylan not to ‘do this to Faith.’ We don’t know what Dylan is going to decide to do at this point, but given that he’s been in love with Faith for a while and she’s struggling to cope with her sick son (though Lev has been ‘very attentive’ recently, apparently), he may well decide to spill the beans.

Fenisha (Olivia D’Lima) and Ethan (George Rainsford) continued to get closer when he opened up to her about why he was hesitating continuing his HEMS training.

He told her about the marketplace terror incident and she told him that she’s seen for herself that he has the same instinct to protect people that Big Al, the man who saved Ethan’s life, also had.

So Ethan is going to continue with HEMS and he and Fenisha planned a date, which was a little bit spoiled when Noel (Tony Marshall) and Robyn invited themselves along.

Noel was celebrating the fact that he’s become a granddad, as former coffee shop queen Honey (and a former girlfriend of Ethan, let’s not forget) has had a baby.

And Jacob (Charles Venn) got the job he went for last week – so Jacob is now officially the new Charlie.
