Chelsea hope to announce a deal for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the next 48 hours after agreeing a £27.96m fee for the Senegal international.

The Blues have been locked in negotiations with the Ligue 1 club for over a fortnight and the French outfit have fought hard to ascertain a bigger upfront fee from Chelsea.

The Blues have finally agreed to pay a fee of around £22.5m to Rennes, with an extra £5.46m arriving in achievable add-ons.

Mendy is set to sign a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge and he will undergo his medical on Tuesday.

According to RMC, the 28-year-old will undergo his medical in Berlin, Germany because of coronavirus restrictions currently in place in the United Kingdom.

Frank Lampard insists any goalkeeper signing will challenge Kepa for the no1 spot in west London but it’s unlikely that the Spaniard will keep his spot given his recent form.

The 24-year-old made a huge mistake in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, when Sadio Mane intercepted his pass out to tap into an empty net.

Mendy will become Chelsea’s seventh signing of the summer and the club will hope to have him registered in time for Friday’s midday deadline, which would enable him to feature against West Brom on the weekend.

The Blues take on Barnsley in the League Cup before then, with Thiago Silva in line to make his debut.

However, the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr are currently unavailable.
