The episode saw Alison speak to Walter Tull’s ancestors, who opened up about his story as the first Black outfield player to feature in the English top flight.
He later became the first British Army officer of Afro-Caribbean descent, before tragically dying at the age of 29 in the First World War.
Despite the efforts of the men he served alongside, his body was never recovered.
In one emotional scene, footballer Dele Alli pays tribute to Tull, explaining: ‘Walter’s story was one that really meant a lot to me and meant a lot to us.’
He added: ‘It’s crazy to think about what he had to go through…it’s because of people like Walter that we can do what we do.’
Previously speaking about the series, Alison explained that she thinks people are reluctant to learn more about Black history. However, she added the tide is now changing.
She said on This Morning: ‘I do think the whole lockdown had a massive part of it, in the fact that everyone was now listening, and everyone wanted to listen, and everyone wanted to listen to different voices.
‘I definitely feel there is a movement, there is a shake-up, and I’m happy with that. I really am.’
‘I think people are listening there’s still people who are a little bit reluctant, and that’s okay,’ she said of people who are hitting back against Black Lives Matter.
‘That’s okay to be a little bit reluctant because sometimes, you know when you step into the unknown, it’s a little bit fearful. It’s scary for some people, and that’s okay.
‘We’ve got to give people a little bit of time.’
Alison Hammond: Back To School is available on catch-up on ITV Hub.
