Mark Lutton has left the Bake Off 2020 tent after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith during Japanese week.

The kawaii-themed week was a first for GBBO – and not everyone rose to the challenge.

Lottie Bedlow earned the title of Star Baker after particularly impressing Paul with the sponge on her kawaii showstopper

However, after a ‘disaster’ showstopper, it turned out to be Mark’s week to leave.

‘I thought it was my time tonight,’ Mark reflected, before insisting: ‘They’re happy tears as well because I’ve made it to week six of Bake Off.’

He added: ‘I’ve made some amazing friends,’ before pointing out: ‘It’s been brilliant from start to finish, it really has.’

The Northern Irish baker failed to impress the judges on both the technical, placing fifth out of seven, and the showstopper.

In fact, Paul told him off his showstopper bake: ‘It’s cruel to say that it’s inedible, but it’s getting there.’

After Mark’s name was called by Matt Lucas, Prue added: ‘Poor Mark, he had a disaster of a showstopper.’

So far, we’ve seen the bakers take on cakes, biscuits, bread, chocolate and pastry – and bid farewell to Loriea, Mak, Rowan, Sura and Linda (who was last week’s tent casualty) – now leaving just six contestants to continue battling it out.

The show’s first ever Japanese week saw the contestants having to produce their take on Asian steamed buns in the signature challenge.

They were challenged to a tricky technical, matcha crepe cakes, while the showstopper saw the bakers working around the theme of kawaii – the Japanese love of all things cute.

Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
