The Great British Bake Off’s Lottie Bedlow and Mark Lutton faced off as they had exactly the same idea for Japanese Week.

In the signature challenge in Tuesday’s episode, the bakers were tasked with making eight steamed buns.

Both Lottie and Mark discovered they both had decided to make their buns in the shape of burger buns.

Mark’s were filled with beef mince, onion, cheese and gherkins (with gherkin-free one for Paul Hollywood).

Presenter Noel Fielding joked that his were going to be way better than his competitor’s, adding: ‘I’m not gonna lie, she’s lucky to still be here.’

Mark later said: ‘My burgers are way better than Lottie’s.’

In a bit of friendly banter, he called over: ‘Burger off, Lottie.’

‘No, you burger off,’ she fired back.

Fans called for more scenes between the pair based on that exquisite burger pun alone.

‘I need just a full show of mark and lottie bickering while making food,’ one said.

Another fan tweeted: ‘Mark and lottie’s banter has me CRYING.’

‘I’m living for the banter between Mark and Lottie. It’s so cute,’ read a further comment, while one said: ‘Mark and lottie are my two favourite people i want more mark and lottie content.’

When the challenge came to an end they could help but enviously look at what the other had created, each declaring that it was better than what they had come up with.

Lottie’s burger steamed buns were adorned with black sesame seeds while Mark sprinkled white ones over his.

Lottie noted that their techniques were different – Mark fried his pork first whereas Lottie added hers into the bun raw.

She added that if Mark got a Hollywood handshake she would ‘be very happy for him’, although her face suggested otherwise before she broke into a big grin.

To her steamed bun burger Lottie added layers of beef, onion, cheese and spiralised chips on the side.

Paul’s intense dislike of gherkins divided the opinion of viewers on social media.

However, Matt Lucas was quick with the life advice, as he declared: ‘Never judge a man by his gherkin.’

The episode also saw the tent take on a tricky, layered technical challenge and a showstopper inspired by kawaii.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
