The 2021 American Express PGA Golf Tournament will be played in La Quinta in January without an in-person spectator section due to the coronavrius pandemic, organizers announced Tuesday.
The tournament, formally known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic, will be played at PGA West in La Quinta and La Quinta Country Club from Jan. 21-24.
“The health and safety of the La Quinta and Coachella Valley communities, as well as our players, volunteers and all other partners, has remained of utmost importance throughout the pandemic,” said Jeff Sanders, executive director of the tournament and president of Sportfive Golf Events, the tournament’s management company.
“While we are disappointed to announce that we will not be able to host our amazing fans at this year’s event, we will continue to work closely with the PGA Tour as well as local, state and federal agencies to ensure the well-being of all who are allowed onsite during tournament week.”
Phil Mickelson and Andrew Landry, who won last year’s tournament, are among the slate of 155 professional golfers set to compete. Michelson’s charity, the Mickelson Foundation, will continue to serve as the tournament host organization.
The three-day pro-am is set to return this year, and will be “conducted within local health guidelines and with PGA Tour COVID-19 testing policies in place for both professional and amateur players,” organizers said.
The event dates back to 1959, when a group of local businessmen and community leaders decided to produce a golf tournament to support local nonprofits, naming it the Palm Springs Golf Classic. The tournament was later renamed the Bob Hope Desert Classic and has undergone several name changes in recent years.
In September 2019, the PGA Tour announced that American Express signed a multi-year deal as title sponsor of the event.
