Noel Fielding has become a firm favourite with Great British Bake Off viewers since he stepped into the tent, in 2017.

The IT Crowd star and Sandi Toksvig initially replaced former hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins when Bake Off moved over to Channel 4.

He was joined by pal Matt Lucas for the most recent series when Sandi quit, with fans loving their bond.

However, the 47-year-old caused concern when he was replaced for the upcoming Christmas instalment of the show.

So what exactly is going on?

It was confirmed that Noel would not be taking part in the festive Bake Off, which has already been filmed.

Instead, Extra Slice presenter – and Bake Off Professional presenter – Tom Allen will be stepping into his iconic shirt for the special.

A spokesperson confirmed to Metro.co.uk that he was unable to film the episode as he was on paternity leave, as partner Lliana Bird welcomed their second child together.

An announcement on whether Noel will be back for the next series of Bake Off has not been made but, seeing as fans have taken the comedian to their heart, we hope he’ll be back.

Who is taking part in the Christmas special?

Bosses have not confirmed the air date for the festive fun, but a string of former contestants will be popping back up in the tent.

James Hillery has made a return after his appearance in the the 2017 offering, as well as 2018 star Ruby Bhogal, and Rosie Brandreth-Poynter and Jamie Finn, who both competed last year.

‘Super excited to share I will be on the Christmas bake off this festive season with the lovely Rosie, Ruby and Jamie,’ James enthused.

‘We had a blast back in the tent baking festive goodies.’

There is also an extra Christmas present for us all, as there is another special in the New Year.

Helena Garcia and Henry Bird from the 2019 season, and previous winners Nancy Birtwhistle and Rahul Mandal will go head-to-head.

We’re already hungry just thinking about it.

Great British Bake Off is available to stream on 4OD.
