Victoria Derbyshire shared a heart to heart with Jessica Plummer about her breast cancer diagnosis on Saturday’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, crediting the NHS with saving her life.

The broadcaster, 52, was taking a shower while Jess pumped the water for her, when the EastEnders star asked whether she had had to have a mastectomy following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015

Victoria revealed that she had, but told Jessica that she didn’t have private healthcare insurance: ‘No, the NHS. Amazing. NHS are superb. They saved my life. They saved my life, you know.’

She added in the Telegraph: ‘Jess was pumping the water for me in the shower and she just started asking me lots of really frank and open questions about my breast cancer diagnosis.’

Victoria also revealed how she discovered she had cancer: ‘So I was going to bed on a Sunday night and getting undressed in the bathroom, I think I’d had a bath, and I just looked in the mirror and my right breast was about two inches lower than my left.’

She reassured Jessica – who revealed she also had one boob lower than the other – that if it had always been like that it was probably not a sign of cancer for her, adding: ‘So that’s your normal. I knew that wasn’t how I normally looked.

‘Not only that, the nipple had become inverted so it was as though someone was pulling it backwards, do you know what I mean? Honestly, I thought, oh, that looks weird, oh, I’ll just sort that tomorrow.

‘I did not think anything. I didn’t. And five days later it was confirmed that it was breast cancer.’

Following the diagnosis, Victoria admitted she and her husband Mark thought she was going to die: ‘We could barely speak, you know. We could barely speak to each other.

‘We are talkers, we are open, we are you know, and we just had no words because honestly all I was thinking was I’m going to die. Seriously, I’m going to die.

‘And then, I thought I’m not going to see my boys grow up, I’m not going to grow old with Mark, I mean it was just, I just thought my luck’s run out, you know.’

Victoria revealed that her cancer wasn’t in the form of a lump like she was expecting: ‘It was all over. It was disparate.

‘It wasn’t a lump. It was like, how would I describe it, if you had loads of string all messed up it was like that, sort of long bits, it was all over the place. It wasn’t a solid lump which is why you need all that chemo and then targeted radiotherapy.’

Jessica said: ‘And that’s why you didn’t feel it before,’ to which Victoria replied: ‘Yeah, exactly because there’s not a lump but it’s so important because most women think you’re looking for a lump, actually you’re not, you’re looking for your.. [changes].

‘Your breasts look different to how they normally look. Do you know what I mean. But if you get it early, it’s totally doable. You will survive.’

Victoria says she likes speaking to people about breast cancer in order to educate others on what to look out for: ‘I am really passionate about talk to people about breast cancer, I’m so open about it, even though it was recounting some painful times.

‘I loved having a young woman asking me about it, someone who’s, gone through it so I could just tell her the facts.’

Jessica appreciated the conversation too, adding later: ‘Victoria is an incredible strong woman. I feel like I’ve learned so much just from that conversation. So much that I’m going to make sure I tell my daughter.’

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here airs daily from 9pm on ITV.
