Mads Mikkelsen has been confirmed to take over the role of Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 from Johnny Depp.
Warner Bros confirmed the news that the character would be recast following Johnny being asked to step down from the role.
Johnny, 57, had played the role of Grindelwald since 2018, having taken over from Colin Farrell, but was asked to resign after losing his libel trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Mads, 54, had been hotly tipped for the role, but as recently as last week he had claimed to be in the dark about whether he had been approached for the job.
The Chaos Walking star told IGN: ‘Oh, that is on the rumour basis as we speak. So I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.’
Johnny had announced his resignation following the ruling in his libel case, when a judge determined there was ‘overwhelming evidence’ he had assaulted his ex-wife.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star had told his followers: ‘In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement.
‘Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.
‘Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.
‘Finally, I wish to say this. The surreal judgement of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.
‘My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time. Thank you for reading.’
It was also revealed that Johnny would be paid his full salary for the role, despite only having filmed one scene, due to his ‘pay or play’ contract.
