Manchester United’s defending against Istanbul Basaksehir was ‘comical and laughable’ and both Nemanja Matic and Dean Henderson should be blamed for the opening goal, believes club legend Paul Scholes.
The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 in Turkey in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they turned in a flaccid performance in Istanbul.
Demba Ba opened the scoring in bizarre fashion for the hosts as he was left completely unmarked from a Manchester United corner, meaning a long ball from the back put him clear through on goal from his own half.
It was inexplicable from the United defence and Scholes could barely get his head round it, blaming the deepest defender, Matic, and goalkeeper Henderson for not sixing the positional mistake before it was too late.
‘It’s comical, it’s laughable what has happened,’ Scholes told BT Sport.
‘Normally before a game you have your set-pieces, you’ll have your man who should be on the halfway line for corners.
‘They’ve got nobody within 20 yards of their centre-forward.
‘We saw [assistant manager] Mick Phelan trying to organise, trying to get people there, but it just didn’t happen.
‘Dean Henderson, he should be able to see that as well. Dean Henderson especially [needs to take responsibility].
‘Matic, a man of his experience, you’re telling me he can’t see that man 20 yards behind him?’
Scholes aimed another barb at Matic, criticising his pace and claiming the former Chelsea midfielder can’t run.
‘Why would he leave him when Matic can’t run anyway?’ Scholes said.
‘Matic has got 20 yards to make up on him, there’s never in a million years he’s gonna get there.’
Manchester United have now lost two on the spin after home defeat to Arsenal on Sunday in the Premier League but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking forward to Saturday’s clash with Everton to put results right.
‘it’s not easy to be positive now losing the way we did,’ said the boss. ‘These players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday morning to get going again.’
