Stormy Weekend Forecast For Riverside County

Two fast-moving storm systems were bringing wet and windy weather to Riverside County this weekend, as well as the first rainfall since spring in some places.

Below-average temperatures were expected across the region, with highs expected to reach 39 degrees in Idyllwild, 48 degrees in Hemet, 54 degrees in Hemet, 58 degrees in Riverside, 68 degrees in Palm Springs and 70 degrees in Thermal, according to the National Weather Service.

While some rainfall had already been recorded around Riverside County on Saturday morning, the heaviest rainfall was expected to arrive through the afternoon, with another round due Sunday, forecasters said.

Before Saturday, Palm Springs Airport had not recorded any rainfall since April 11, according to the NWS.

A flash flood warning issued for the Apple and El Dorado burn scar in Riverside County expired at 10:15 a.m., but a flash flood watch continued for Riverside County valleys through 8 p.m.

“Locally heavy rain is possible, especially from late this morning through early this evening, which could result in debris flows in and below the El Dorado and Apple burn scars, mainly below 5500 ft elevation,” the NWS said.

The Inland Empire will receive up to 0.80 inches of rain, while the deserts will see less than 0.25 inches of rain, forecasters said.

A winter storm warning was also in place until 6 p.m. for the county’s mountain areas above 5,000 feet, including the Idyllwild and Pine Cove areas, where heavy snowfall was expected.

Forecasters said total snow accumulations may reach up to 6 inches at 6,000 feet, 6 to 12 inches between 6,000 to 7,000 feet and 12 to 18 inches between 7,000 to 8,000 feet.

Desert mountain slopes will see strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph, and in rural desert slopes, gusts are expected to reach 70 mph, according to forecasters.

The second storm was expected to move away by Sunday night, making way to sunny but still cool weather into the middle of next week, the NWS said.
