Chargers To Face Broncos With Herbert Seeking Rookie Touchdown Pass Record

Justin Herbert will try to set the NFL record for touchdown passes by a rookie when the Los Angeles Chargers play host to the Denver Broncos Sunday at SoFi Stadium, but he could be without his top two receiving targets.

Receiver Keenan Allen was ruled out Sunday because of a hamstring injury. He leads the Chargers with 100 receptions, 992 receiving yards and eight touchdown receptions.

Tight end Hunter Henry, the Chargers’ No. 2 receiver with 60 receptions, was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list Thursday, leaving his status for the game unclear.

Herbert has thrown 27 touchdown passes, matching the record set by Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns in 2018. Herbert has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 12 of his 13 starts. He has thrown at least two touchdown passes in nine games, also tying Mayfield’s rookie record.

The Chargers will be without their top defensive player, defensive end Joey Bosa, who will miss the game between the two 5-9 teams who share third place in the AFC West because of a concussion and shin injury.

Bosa and Allen were the lone Chargers selected as 2021 Pro Bowlers, with Bosa designated as a starter for the AFC. The Pro Bowl will not be played this season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bosa is second in the AFC with 15 tackles for loss and 27 quarterback hits and leads the Chargers with 7.5 sacks.

The Chargers are seeking their first three-game winning streak since 2018 following a 20-17 victory over Atlanta on Dec. 13 and a 30-27 overtime victory at Las Vegas on Dec. 17.

The game is a rematch of the Chargers’ 31-30 loss at Denver on Nov. 1 when they were unable to hold a 21-point third-quarter lead. Drew Lock threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Hamler and Brandon McManus kicked the tie-breaking extra point as time expired.

The Chargers have lost their last three games against the Broncos and trail the series that began in 1960, 69-52-1.

Denver will be without its second-leading rusher, Phillip Lindsay, who has hip and knee injuries. Lindsay has rushed for 502 yards and one touchdown on 118 carries. He had his second-best game of the season against the Chargers, with 83 yards on six carries, including a season-long 55-yard run for a touchdown.
