It isn’t the first time that Chris Gascoyne has warned Coronation Street fans that alcoholism could lead Peter Barlow to die – and he has issued another stark teaser that events over the 60th anniversary will leave his life in the balance.

As he looks set to discover that Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) is the man that Carla Connor (Alison King) recently slept with, the family looks set to be ripped apart.

And as Carla worries about the impact on her fiance’s health, it seems that Peter may hit the drink hard once more. Chris has revealed that this will have life changing consequences – and even if it doesn’t kill him this time, Peter will be on his last chance at life where booze is concerned.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I love the character of Peter. I don’t think too much about the character, the writers write it so well and I just play it. He is troubled but he is a survivor.

‘I kind of understand him through instinct – I don’t understand his choices but I understand why he does it. Whenever he has to hurt Ken, that’s the hardest bit for me and I don’t know why!

‘We discussed the alcoholism relapse in the 60th anniversary – for so long, every time he has a drink, we are told that he can’t drink again or he will die. After this he can never ever drink again.’

If he comes through this trauma, his relationship with Carla may be on the rocks – and Chris is unsure over whether they can make it through another crisis.

He sighed: ‘You never know which way it will go. If one is going to do something to upset the other – I like it, they can’t live with each other and they can’t live without each other. They’re deeply in love but they’re not good for each other.

‘I think it’s a great storyline and it’s a real test for their love and understanding for each other – as far as it can possibly go. Peter supported her through the psychosis – we’ll see what this one does!’
