Gone are the days where Tim Metcalfe’s (Joe Duttine) only worries in Coronation Street would be increasing his workload with his window cleaning job or Sally (Sally Dynevor) wrongly getting arrested for money laundering. Tim has been involved in one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year involving his dad Geoff (Ian Bartholomew) coercively controlling wife Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King). Up until only a couple of months ago, Tim was defending his dad, horrified that his friends and family were accusing him of abusing Yasmeen.
For ages it seemed there was nothing or no-one that could make Tim see the truth, but it was seeing video proof of his dad abusing Yasmeen that made Tim finally see his dad wasn’t the hero he thought he was, which resulted in Tim powerfully confronting Geoff about everything he had put him and Yasmeen through.
With Yasmeen’s trial being one of the main focuses during the 60th anniversary next month, it’s a given we will see a lot of Tim too, as he would’ve already announced to his dad that he wants to stand as a witness for the defence in court.
While Geoff has been busy tormenting Tim and his family, it’s left Tim with no choice but to protect his family from his father – but who’s been helping Tim? There’s been some support from Sally and their friend Abi (Sally Carman), but we haven’t really seen a great deal on how this ordeal has impacted Tim as he’s usually busy being the person keeping his family safe.
When Yasmeen’s trial is over and Geoff at last leaves the Street, it’s possible that will be when we finally see how this has affected Tim, potentially destroying his life after an extremely dramatic year in Weatherfield.
We all remember how Tim used to see his dad; the perfect father figure who was around for a laugh and advice at any time Tim would need it. We know Tim thought highly of his dad growing up, so discovering he wasn’t the hero he thought he was via a video clip that exposed his true character is bound to have an effect on him somehow.
However, due to the distraction Tim has of protecting Sally and Faye (Ellie Leach) from Geoff, the only time we see Tim expressing his thoughts towards his dad is through anger. It could mean that soon enough, Tim will crack and we could be seeing a him face a downward spiral as his emotions begin to catch up with him.
The matter of Tim’s real mum Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) still missing is a big problem. As much as Alya (Sair Khan), and Imran (Charlie De Melo) need to find Elaine to encourage her to stand as a witness to increase Yasmeen’s chances of being released, Tim needs to see his mother too. As heart-breaking as it is, with no-one having any clues on Elaine’s whereabouts, there’s a possibility she may never be found, which means Tim may never find out what Geoff did to Elaine when they were together.
Tim seeing his mum again is something we’d love to see, but back when Elaine saw Tim again for the first time in years, Tim was still defending his dad, and didn’t believe Elaine was his real mum. If Geoff turns out to be the only one who really knows where Elaine is and leaves the cobbles before telling Tim, he could be left blaming himself for never believing Yasmeen and Elaine in the first place.
Geoff’s exit has been something we’ve been waiting months for. We know he will say goodbye to Weatherfield next month, but it’s currently unknown on just how he will leave the show. The way Geoff leaves the cobbles will have a huge impact on Tim – especially if his dad dies.
If Geoff is killed, and Elaine never returns, Tim will be left with no parental figure in his life, with no closure on his dad getting his comeuppance, or meeting his real mum again. Everything will change for Tim when Geoff leaves, and right now as he is so focused on looking after his family, Tim isn’t really allowing any time to look after himself – meaning everything bubbling over is practically inevitable.
But if Geoff doesn’t die, perhaps his exit will be as a result of an event during the anniversary week?
Faye has been caught up in Geoff’s storyline, initially defending her granddad, but now isn’t afraid to be like her dad and stand up to Geoff. Elsewhere, Faye has also found herself involved in a lot of scenes with Ray Crosby (Mark Frost), who is taking centre stage during the anniversary week as he prepares to flatten the street for his redevelopment plans.
We’ve already mentioned how Faye might find herself in danger as Ray puts his plans into place, but if Faye’s peril isn’t because of Ray, will Geoff put his granddaughter in danger?
Of course, if Geoff unintentionally or intentionally puts Faye in danger, this will only add to the long list of traumas Tim will have to deal with, and if Tim loses Geoff, Faye and never finds Elaine, he really will be left on his own. Let’s not forget how Tim said he’d like to think he’d be able to save Faye and Sally if they were ever in danger after the bistro shooting.
Something that seemed like Tim just being the protective person he is could well be foreshadowing upcoming events, and if Tim tries to save Faye and fails, the guilt he feels for never believing Yasmeen about Geoff, never saving his daughter and everything else he’s been through will no doubt destroy him.
Tim arrived in Weatherfield as a bit of a comedic character. He would have laugh with Steve (Simon Gregson) and would find himself involved in hilarious mishaps. Now though, things have changed.
With everything that Tim’s been through, we’re expecting to see a completely different side to him. After spending months not believing Yasmeen, it’s possible he may not feel worthy of anyone’s support as he never saw the truth.
As Tim is constantly standing up to Geoff and using anger as a way to express his emotions, it’s highly likely no-one will see how damaged Tim has become by this traumatic year meaning the next few months have the potential to be a dark and emotional time for him.
Although Geoff may be leaving soon, Tim is going to feel the impact of his dad’s abuse for an awfully long time.
