Channel 4’s ‘deepfake’ version of the Queen’s speech has been flooded with Ofcom complaints.
The broadcaster used digital trickery to make an actress look like Queen Elizabeth II for what had been billed as a warning about misinformation and fake news, however many took offence to the programme and branded it ‘disrespectful’.
Television watchdog Ofcom has confirmed 214 complained about the alternative Christmas message, which aired opposite the BBC’s broadcast of the official annual video.
A spokesperson added: ‘We are assessing these complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.’
The speech included jokes about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the UK, as well as a nod to the scandal surrounding the Duke of York and his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Queen also performed a TikTok dance routine and revealed her penchant for ‘Netflix and Phil’ with the Duke of Edinburgh.
A spokesperson for Channel 4 recently defended the speech to Metro.co.uk defended.
‘It is very clear in the four-minute film that this is a parody of the Christmas Day address and viewers will be left in no doubt that it is not real,’ they said.
‘However, while the film is light-hearted, affectionate and comedic in tone, it carries a very important and timely message about trust and the ease with which convincing misinformation can be created and spread.
‘This is part of a series of programmes examining the spread of misinformation and a Dispatches documentary, Deepfakes: Can You Believe Your Eyes, will further explore the emergence of deepfake technology on 28th December on Channel 4.’
Deepfake technology has become increasingly prevalent over recent years and can be used to create convincing but completely manufactured video content of high-profile figures, most notably of former US president Barack Obama, who has been the subject of a number of deepfake videos.
Audiences shared their discomfort at the Channel 4 deepfake on social media.
‘This is deeply disrespectful of HM Queen. Shame on you Channel 4,’ blasted one.
Echoing a similar sentiment, another wrote: ‘What an utterly disrespectful thing to do. This is a direct attack on HM The Queen and action should be taken against Channel 4 for the downright disrespect they are showing to the sovereign.
‘Putting words in her mouth quite literally is completely inappropriate.’
The Alternative Christmas Message is available for catch-up on All 4.
