Frank Lampard admitted he was ‘gutted’ that Timo Werner didn’t get on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win over West Ham on Monday night but backed the Germany international to start finding the back of the net regularly soon.
Werner has scored four goals in 14 Premier League games this season but was guilty of missing a host of chances against the Hammers.
Goals from Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham were enough to get Lampard’s side three points and propel them to fifth in the table.
But he was left disappointed that summer signing Werner didn’t get on the scoresheet, too.
‘It will help confidence,’ Lampard told Sky Sports after the match.
‘The question about trying to keep a cool head in important moments… it’s crucial if you’re going to do anything good over a long period of time. As a squad this year it’ll be tough for us maybe to challenge all the way because we haven’t really had those moments.
‘It feels we have to grow a bit of character, confidence in games. We saw at Wolves, we should have dealt with that game. Today we dealt with a really tough.
‘So good confidence but I’m gutted Timo didn’t get his goal because I think that would have been great for his confidence.
‘He’s getting chances so I think that will come and it’s confidence for the team.’
He added in an interview with the BBC: ‘Once we got the second goal, Kovacic came on and got us up the pitch and we could have had more goals in the end.
‘That’s the period Timo is in, it’s unfortunate but he’s getting in the positions – when one (goal) goes in it will be a run for him.
‘Tammy (Abraham) and Oli (Giroud) both bring different things, Tammy did his thing today and that’s what we needed.’
