Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand admits Fred was a ‘lucky boy’ to avoid a red card for an apparent headbutt on Paris Saint-Germain ace Leandro Paredes.

A fracas occured after the Brazilian was caught up in an incident with the midfielder midway through the first half but it was not seen by the referee at the time.

Replays showed that Fred had leaned into the Argentine, stopping short of a headbutt but certainly doing enough to see a red card.

However, Fred somehow managed to avoid a sending off, with the referee deciding via the pitchside monitor that it was only worthy of a yellow card.

United were already 1-0 behind after Neymar’s opener and being reduced to 10-men would have made the visitors overwhelming favourites to get the win they needed to take control of the group.

‘He is a lucky boy to be on the pitch,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.

‘There’s been a few occasions where he could have got at least a yellow card.

‘This is the headbutt. There is a coming together and he motions towards the player. He makes a meal of it but he is lucky to be on the pitch.

Fortunately for Fred, he stayed on the field and he was celebrating with Marcus Rashford after the England forward saw his effort deflect past Keylor Navas.

That strike meant United were level at half-time but they were superior after the break and squandered two priceless opportunities to extend their lead.

Anthony Martial was guilty of the first when he somehow blazed an effort over the ball from all of eight yards.

It was former PSG forward Edinson Cavani that went close next as he saw his exquisite lob cannon off the crossbar after he raced through on goal.
