Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has shared new details about the late Chadwick Boseman’s role as T’Challa in the upcoming animated What If…? series, the trailer for which came out during Disney’s recent 2020 Investor’s Day.
What If…?, which will be released on streaming platform Disney Plus, is based on the comic book series of the same name, exploring how various storylines could have happened differently in the Marvel Universe.
T’Challa (Black Panther) will appear in the series as a different version of Star-Lord, as seen in the trailer when he takes off a helmet similar to the one worn by Chris Pratt in the MCU films.
Chadwick, who played Black Panther in his eponymous film in addition to Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, died in August aged 43 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.
During a recent interview, Marvel boss Kevin said that Chadwick recorded several episodes for the What If… ? series.
The actor ‘came in about four times and recorded numerous episodes,’ Kevin said, stating that ‘in hindsight, it’s very moving’.
‘These are all sorts of stories we couldn’t explore through live action,’ Kevin told Emmy Magazine via ComicBook.com.
Other Marvel actors who lent their voices to What If…? include Hayley Atwell as Captain Peggy Carter, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Michael B Jordan as Killmonger.
While speaking at Disney’s Investors Day, Kevin confirmed that Chadwick will not be recast as T’Challa in the sequel to Black Panther.
‘I wanted to acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and member of the Marvel Studios family,’ he said.
‘Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally.
‘His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. And it’s for that reason that we will not recast the character.’
What If…? is expected to be released on Disney Plus in 2021.
