Riyad Mahrez questions Alex Runarsson after howler in Arsenal vs Man City clash

Man Of The Match winner Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City talks to the media after the Carabao Cup Quarter Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on December 22, 2020 in London, England. The match will be played without fans, behind closed doors as a Covid-19 precaution.

Riyad Mahrez admitted he was ‘surprised’ by the positioning of Alex Runarsson as the Arsenal goalkeeper made a howler early in the second half of their Carabao Cup exit.

Mahrez scored the winner for Manchester City as they dumped Arsenal out of the competition, with Runarsson letting the ball slip through his gloves in painful fashion.

Alexandre Lacazette had drawn Arsenal level in the first half after Gabriel Jesus’s opener – another goal where Runarsson was at fault.

Mahrez’s free-kick put Pep Guardiola’s men in control and Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte added goals for good measure in a 4-1 win.

After the match, Mahrez – who was named man of the match – admitted his winner was somewhat fortunate.

And he expressed his surprise at Runarsson’s actions in the buildup to the goal.

‘It was a solid performance,’ Mahrez told Sky Sports after the match.

‘We started good and then they equalise. We got lucky with the free-kick and then we got the third one and then it was more easy for us.

‘We cannot always dominate every game. They can score at any time but in the second half we scored the second and the third and we made it more easy for us.

‘I was surprised by the position of the keeper.

‘He was so close to the post. I thought he was going to move just a little bit so I tried to put it there.

‘But he didn’t move. And luckily he didn’t catch it properly so it’s good for us.’
