Andy Cole thinks Anthony Martial is an ‘erratic’ finisher but still thinks the Manchester United attacker should be setting himself an ambitious goals target.
Martial scored from open play for the first time this season in the Premier League in the first half of a 2-1 win against Aston Villa as United moved level on points with Liverpool at the top of the table.
The Frenchman headed home from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross to give United a first-half lead but United were pegged back early in the second half as Bertrand Traore got on the scoresheet.
Minutes later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were in front again courtesy of a penalty won by Paul Pogba and buried by Bruno Fernandes
Former United striker Cole admitted he had been puzzled by Martial’s struggles in front of goal this season, even though he acknowledged his finishing can be ‘erratic’.
But he also pointed out that he is far from his peak, and he expects Martial to be aiming for 20 goals a season in the future.
‘It is [a bit of a puzzle] because he’s super talented,’ Cole told Sky Sports before the match.
‘He gets in great positions but sometimes his finishing is a little bit erratic.
‘He doesn’t make the right decision at times.
‘But he’s got all the talent in the world. I genuinely do believe, just like Marcus, he’s nowhere near reached his full potential.
‘He’s got to keep perservering and hopefully go on a good run.’
‘He’s another one, for me personally, he could get himself 20 goals a season easily.’
