Manchester United are confident of seeing off competition from rivals Manchester City for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish this summer.

The midfielder’s had a scintillating campaign for the Midlands club, despite the fact that they’re languishing in 19th in the Premier League.

Grealish is expected to leave Villa regardless of whether they survive this season but his value could plummet by as much as £20m should the club return to the Championship.

The midfielder was forced to apologise on Monday for defying government lockdown measures to meet a friend in Birmingham on the weekend and he admitted he was ‘deeply embarrassed’ about the incident.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has discarded of players that he feels are not solely focused on football and reports had claimed that United may cool their interest in Grealish.

However, the Times insists Grealish is expected to join the club once the transfer window opens and he will become United’s first signing of the summer.

It’s unclear whether Grealish’s arrival means Paul Pogba will depart but it’s clear that the Frenchman wants to leave Old Trafford.

Juventus and Real Madrid are both interested in the World Cup winner but they each have doubts over whether they can finance a deal for the £120m-rated midfielder, who commands £300,000-a-week in wages.

United will then move on to purusing a £120m deal for Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho once a deal for Grealish is completed, while Juventus ace Matthijs de Ligt is also a target.
