An Antiques Roadshow guest was left gutted after finding out his grandfather’s war medals would have hit the £250,000 mark – if only they’d been bigger.
The guest came on the BBC show bearing Captain Henry Reynolds’ miniature medals, including his Victoria Cross.
The set of medals commemorated Henry’s bravery in WWI, particularly in capturing 70 German troops in 1917.
He explained that his grandfather’s troops were ambushed in an attack by enemy troops.
‘When they came through, the Germans opened fire,’ he explained.
‘My grandfather rallied his battalion – all his troops were scattered – and proceeded from shell hole to shell hole until he got near enough to throw a grenade.’
‘He was standing at the door with his revolver and they all came out. He captured 70 Germans and two machine guns. He wont the Victoria cross for that.’
The guest went on: ‘They said his backpack was riddled with bullet holes from where he’d missed bullets.’
Expert Mark Smith was seriously impressed with the story, remarking: ‘Your group is very tiny but what it represents is very spectacular.
‘I’m amazed at what this man did.’
He then explained the use of the mini medals to viewers at home.
Mark said: ‘You wear them on your mess dress or your evening dress and they represent the medals you have won.
‘But they are for evening.’
And here’s where things get devastating.
Mark explained: ‘It is an incredibly good set of miniature medals… but the story belittles the price unfortunately.’
He then predicted that the set would fetch between £3,500 to £4,000, to which his guest replied, taken aback: ‘Really? Good Lord!’
However, if they had been the real deal – we’d have been at £250,000.
Mark said: ‘If it had been the big ones then it’d have been a quarter of a million.’
Captain Reynolds’ grandson took the blow well, joking: ‘Aren’t the regiment lucky then!’
Ouch.
