Donald Trump retweeted a call to fire White House infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci then backtracked to say that he has no plans to ax Fauci.
On Sunday, Trump retweeted a former Republican congressional candidate’s criticism of Fauci, who is the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and most prominent medical expert on the White House coronavirus task force.
The tweet, originally penned by DeAnna Lorraine, said: ‘Fauci is now saying that had Trump listened to the medical experts earlier he could’ve saved more lives. Fauci was telling people on February 29 that there was nothing to worry about and it posed no threat to the US public at larget Time to #FireFauci.’
Trump then retweeted Lorraine and wrote: ‘Sorry Fake News , it’s all on tape. I banned China long before people spoke up.’
Following Trump’s retweet, thousands of Twitter users began using the hashtag ‘#FireFauci,’ sparking outrage at the comments towards Fauci, who has an approval rate of almost 80% among Republicans, which is a rare sign of bipartisan support in an incredibly divisive time for American.
The White House later released a statement regarding the president’s retweet, denying that Trump has any plans to dismiss Fauci.
‘This media chatter is ridiculous — President Trump is not firing Dr. Fauci,’ White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley wrote.
‘The President’s tweet clearly exposed media attempts to maliciously push a falsehood about his China decision in an attempt to rewrite history.’

‘It was Democrats and the media who ignored Coronavirus choosing to focus on impeachment instead, and when they finally did comment on the virus it was to attack President Trump for taking the bold decisive action to save American lives by cutting off travel from China and from Europe. Dr. Fauci has been and remains a trusted advisor to President Trump.’ Gidley continued in the statement.
Lorraine’s tweet, which retweeted by Trump, comes after Fauci said the Trump administration ‘could have saved more lives’ if social distancing guidelines would have been put into effect earlier, but he said ‘there was pushback about shutting things down.’
‘We make a recommendation. Often, the recommendation is taken. Sometimes, it’s not. It is what it is. We are where we are right now,’ Fauci said in an interview with CNN on Sunday.
