Justin Trudeau has been tricked by a Russian comedy duo, who convinced him he was on the phone with teenage environmentalist Greta Thunberg.
The Canadian Prime Minister was urged to leave NATO and to set up a meeting with South Park characters Terrance and Phillip during the 10 minute call.
He was fooled by Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, known as Vovan and Lexus, who used a third person posing as Thunberg.
In the clip posted online, the woman says she is is ‘concerned about the growing international crisis’ and the ‘anticipation of the Third World War’, calling it ‘very scary’.
Trudeau replies ‘yes indeed’ and stresses the need for deescalation around the world.
Taking a swipe at politicians, the prankster says: ‘You are adults but you act like children.
‘We can create a world where there is a place for everyone. For white and black. Christians and Muslims. Trump and Putin. for you and me.
‘For Boris Johnson. For Corbyn. For Terrance and Phillip, who are also known in your country.’
Appearing not to notice the reference to South Park, the Canadian leader replies: ‘No, that is exactly, exactly the right perspective.’
As Trudeau says Thunberg’s visit to Montreal in 2019 ‘helped define’ the results of Canada’s federal election that year, she trickster interrupts and says: ‘But leave Nato. Drop your weapons. Pick flowers. Smile at nature.’
Without hesitation, the Canadian leader responds: ‘I also dream of a world in which soldiers are not necessary, but we don’t live in that world yet, unfortunately.’
Towards the end of the call the prankster says that Prince Harry is a ‘good friend of mine’, adding: ‘I want to ask you to take care of him, he’s a good guy.’
Trudeau says: ‘He is absolutely one of the good guys’, adding that Canadians are also ‘very fond of him’.
The imposter then says: ‘But I sometimes think that his wife manipulates him.’
Trudeau responds: ‘In every relationship, there are complicated concessions and compromises that are the art of living together. I have met Meghan a few times and she’s always been lovely when I met her.’
Towards the end of the call, recorded in January, the trickster says: ‘By the way, Mr. Prime Minister, can you introduce me to Terrence and Phillip? I know that they are big stars in Canada.’
The Prime Minister replies: ‘I would be happy – I’ll ask my team to try and figure out how we can connect you. Because I don’t have their direct coordinates with me now.’
It is only after she repeats the question that Trudeau asks: ‘Wait, Terrance and Philip, were they not in South Park?
‘I don’t personally know them. I believe they are South Park parodies of Canadians.’
The Prime Minister then politely wraps up the phone call.
Vovan and Lexus previously tricked Sir Elton John by called him pretending to be Vladimir Putin, claiming they were keen to talk about gay rights.
Believing he was talking to the Russian President, Sir Elton John said: ‘It’s a great privilege to be able to speak to one of the most influential people in the whole world.’
Prince Harry, also once spoke to the duo, who were again pretending to be Greta Thunberg, and told them he was ‘completely separate’ from most of the Royal Family.
