Cheers were heard up and down the United Kingdom when Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) in Coronation Street was finally released from prison following her horrific abuse ordeal with Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew).

The court scenes involving Yasmeen, Sally (Sally Dynevor), Elaine (Paula Wilcox) and Alya (Sair Khan) were incredibly powerful, and one moment that received a huge reaction was when Geoff took to the stand in front of Imran Habeeb (Charlie De Melo).

After collecting enough evidence to prove Yasmeen’s innocence, Imran successfully destroyed Geoff in front of the judge and the jury, resulting in Geoff’s true, evil side to be exposed once more.

Viewers took to Twitter to share their enjoyment on watching Imran destroy Geoff, describing the scenes as ‘satisfying’ and ‘brilliant to watch’, but did actor Charlie De Melo ever anticipate such a huge reaction to the court case scenes? He told us his thoughts:

‘I didn’t! When I read it, I knew that it was good and it was a big Aaron Sorkin, in the way it was written. I was really excited on a personal level because of that, I think Barty was as well. When it’s in the abstract, you’re visualising someone else doing it and then there was the crushing realisation of this has got to be me!  I’ve got to do this. I was mostly terrified if I’m honest, and the fact that it has gone down well, is very, very thrilling. It’s a huge relief really and I’m very grateful.’

For months, we have all expressed our thoughts on Geoff, but it was Imran who got to say what everybody wanted to say to the abusive character! Charlie explained how important it was to him to perform those scenes:

‘I feel like for anyone who has experience of a person like him, in varying degrees, being able to dress down an abuser like that in a very public way, that was incredibly cathartic for me, at least.

Just to get an opportunity to do that and it seems that has resonated with a lot of people as well.’
